Almost everyone has a smartphone nowadays. Why not make travelling a lot easier for you and keep everything you need on your phone. This is a list of travel apps that will make your travels a lot easier.

Travel Planning and Guides

Google Trips

Works in many languages. This app lets you keep all travel details in one place. It takes booking information from your Gmail automatically. You also get suggestions based what is nearby. 

PackPoint

Not sure of what to pack? This one is for you. Just type in the destination, the number of days, activities and date and the app will give you a list of what you need to pack.

TripAdvisor

A must-have app for planning your itinerary or use at destination. Here you can find highly rated accommodation, restaurants, and tours. This is essential if you want to read reviews of hotels, restaurants and attractions. 

Hipmunk

This app makes travel planning a lot easier. It promises you that it will save time and money on deals like Tonight deals. The apps show you when and where to go for the lowest prices and how far you can go for your budget.

Guides by Lonely Planet

An app where you can find guides written by professional travellers. You can download the apps you need so you don't need the internet to use it.There are not all cities and destinations that are available yet. But those that are available are very useful.

Sygic Travel maps offline and trip planner

Sygic is an app with offline travel maps, travel guides and built-in trip planner. This app makes it possible to build a personal travel guide for your trip. The app combines offline maps with useful information from Wikipedia and the editors of the app.

Triposo

Triposo is a travel guide that is free and best of all- works online. The app has city maps and you can book hotels, tours, transportation and activities by using the app - offline. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

Tripit

Just like Google Trips, Tripit merges all your travel documents into one place. By sending all of your travel info to plans@tripit.com it instantly creates your travel schedule. You can easily access your travel schedule, even when offline.  You can get very useful features like when to leave for the airport and essential real-time alerts. 

Pinterest

Booking Flights

Hopper

If you know where you want to go but have not yet booked flight tickets. Hopper is a great app to watch prices for that destination. hopper also predict the future cheapest prices and you will get a notification when you should buy the tickets to get the best price.

Skyscanner

Skyscanner is such a user-friendly app for booking flights. I use it every time when I book a flight. You can type in your departure and destination Anywhere to see where to go for the lowest price from your destination. It is also a great app to use where you can put in the whole month instead of a specific travel date to see the lowest price to travel. You can also get a good view of the best prices by using the calendar mode. Skyscanner also gives you the opportunity to rent a car and book hotels.

Momondo

Momondo works similarly to Skyscanner.  I have personally got cheaper flight tickets from Skyscanner, they usually don't filter out flight travels that takes long hours, but cheaper tickets. Momondo shows which companies that gives the cheapest prices. Momondo is also a great app for booking hotels where you see the rating of the different hotels.

Kayak flights

Kayak flights also compare many different companies at the same time and show you the cheapest prices. You can sign up for alerts and you can also put the specific route on watch if you want to see if the prices change.

Wherefor

Works only on the web. It is a great app for explorers that can go anywhere but only know the budget and departure destination. Wherefor analyses flight prices and hotel prices for your budget from your chosen destination.

Accommodation apps

Airbnb

Airbnb is something most of us are familiar with. People are renting out their homes, room and property for a short period of time. Sometimes it is even cheaper than a hostel. There are many unique Airbnbs all over the world and those get booked many months in advance. So book the Airbnb early, the best ones get booked first. 

Hostelbookers

Hostelbookers works on the computer and on the phone. It is a great app if you are looking for hostels only. There are ratings and you can read reviews of the different hostels.

Hotel Tonight

Hotel tonight is an excellent app if you are more of a spontaneous traveller. There will always be hotel rooms that doesn't get filled up and hotels want to get them mostly out of it and putting it out there with a great discount. 

Roomer

There is always someone who ends up not travelling because their daughter is really sick or something else happened. You can book a hotel room on Roomer or put it out if you are sick and don't want to pay cancellation fees.

HomeToGo

Rather live in a house when you are travelling or need to find the cheapest accommodation possible?  This app shows you what is available based on dates and destination it is also rated by customers.

Couchsurfing

Couchsurfing is a free way to travel. As a traveller, you can contact hosts who offer their couch for free. The community is built on trust. It is a good idea to spend the time to build a profile and recommendations. When you choose a couch, make sure you always read the reviews. Couchsurfing is also a great way to meet other travellers where there are meetings and events in cities all over the world.

Booking

Booking is a well-known app and website where you can book a hotel room, homestays and hostels. They often offer last-minute deals and it is an excellent app to read and write reviews. You can select the hotel with the best reviews and stars. I always recommend reading the worst reviews.

Trivago

You might have seen the Trivago commercial on TV. It is no surprise what the app is about. The app/website show you a list of the hotels with the websites that offer the lowest prices. You can select the hotels to show the ones best reviews on top as well as the best prices. 

Maps and Transportation

Google maps

I am sure you have heard of Google maps. You can download to make destination offline. To download the map online you first need to search the destination, click more info and download. 

Maps.Me

You don't need internet to use the maps of Maps.Me. It is not a GPS but you can zoom into the streets. You can download the maps of the city or the whole country. I used this one in Cuba because of no internet and it was a lifesaver.

Here WeGo

Here WeGo is like google a GPS that shows you how to get from A to B. You select transportation mode and where you want to go. You don't need internet at all. But if you use the internet it will also show you how the traffic is. This app is not updated everywhere in the world like voice navigation.

Rome2Rio

It is not a map but it shows you how to get from A to B and the different transportation you can use.This app also is a website. You can also see how to get there, how long it takes and for how much. Not that not every single place in the world is able to be used in this app.

Waze

Waze is an excellent app if you are driving. Many places, especially in South America. Waze is a better GPS than google maps and is more update.

Allsubway 

Only for iPhone. It shows you map and information on subways in popular cities around the world.

Ametro

Ametro is for android and is very similar to Allsubway where it shows maps of transit system around the world. Note that every location is not available in this app.

At Destination / Transportation

Around Me

Wonder where the closed ATM is or nearest pub? This app is essential to figure out where the closest necessities are. Anything from bathrooms, shops, gas stations, ATM and pharmacies. This app shows how far those places are from where you are at the moment.

Wikitude

Wikitude allows you to scan ads magazines and pictures etc to give you valuable information. You simply just take a photo and the app will give you the results. This app requires internet and location need to be on. 

Uber/Cabify

 Most of us would know sort of what Uber is. It is a taxi service that is available 24/7 in many cities around the world. It is safe, affordable and easy to use. You order it with the app and it charges your card when you are home. Cabify is kind of the same and is available in countries where Uber is not necessarily available. Notice that these apps are not available everywhere. 

Blablacar

Blablacar is a car-pooling app easy and simple. You just type in where you want to go on a specific time. You can also offer a ride. 

Finding a Bathroom

TakeABreak: Find Toilet/taps

Need a water fountain or a toilet? This app makes it easier to find it near you, including eventual fees. It is connected to google maps and show you the way to the fountain and the toilet.

Toilocator

This is also to locate toilets which is easier to use when you need the nearest toilet possible. It connects it to google maps and shows you the way and how far it is. It also shows you the fee and if it is disabled access. I personally like this one better.

Sitorsquat: Restroom Finder

Sitorsquat works the same as the other two but you can also use a filter to get results by choosing specific features such as Sit-or-Squat Rating, Baby Changing Table, Handicap Accessible, or Free for Public Use restrooms. The app is connected to Facebook. This app also makes it possible for the user to review and post photos.

Money 

Wallet

This is an essential app if you are travelling on a budget or want to keep track on your travel expenses. You type in your budget and what you have spent to have an overview of your economy.

Easy Currency

I love this app. It is so easy and accurate. If you need to Easy Currency is a currency converter where you type in two currencies when you need to know the differences of currencies. 

Other at destination apps 

Alltrails

If you love hiking or biking and the outdoors, in general, this is a must-have app for you. Type in a destination and you see a list of the best-rated trails and if they are dog-friendly, bike friendly and the difficulty rate. 

Google Translate

Most of us know about this app. It is so easy to use if you want to translate something. You can also hear how it is pronounced.

Duolingo

Want to learn a language from scratch? This free app makes it possible to learn any language from Russian, Norwegian, German, Spanish and many more. The app tests your writing, hearing and reading skills. You don't need internet so it's an excellent app to use when you need to kill some time on the plane.

LogMeIn

Tend to forget your documents that are on your computer at home? Download LogMeIn before you go and connect it to your home computer.

Wifi-finder - Free Wifi Map

Never struggle to find wifi again with this app makes it a lot easier to find wifi around you. It is an offline app and works all over the world. The hotspots are verified and speed tested. You need to download the location when you are online before you use it offline.

Travel Journal

Journi

Keep your memories fresh and write a travel journal and add pictures to this app. No need for a notebook anymore.  Journi makes it easier for you.

Track my tour

TrackMyTour only works on Apple products. Let your friends and family follow your trip by sending them a link. It lets you create an online map of your journey and share your trip.

Networking 

Travello

Travello is a social media app for travellers. It is working in over 180 countries. It is an excellent app if you are looking for friends in a new country or people to travel with. The app lets you follow people and get inspired.

Travelibro

Travelibro is an app where you can share your travel stories. It works very much as a journal as well as a way to get inspired by other travellers.

Vayable

Meet locals at your destination and join their unique guide they have created. Only works in the destinations: Paris, New York, London, Barcelona, Rome and San Francisco. 

Photography apps

Adobe Photoshop Express

This is my favourite editing app for photography, If you have a Creative Cloud you can connect to that.

Snapseed

Is also a good editing app for your photos. It is simple and very easy to use.

Instagram

Use Instagram story and make people follow your trip. Remember to tag the locations so people around you can see that story. Instagram is a great app for inspiration.

Weather apps

WeatherBug

Weather bug is a great weather app that is quite accurate where it shows real-time forecast, weather maps and you can get notifications and alerts. 

Yr

YR is another great weather app where you can see forecast on very specific places all over the world. It is quite accurate and easy to use and understand.
