Questions to Ask Before Buying an RV

02 Nov Questions to Ask Before Buying an RV

Sharing is caring!

An RV is a great way to be able to travel the country. You can see things you’ve only dreamed of, camp at national parks and spend time on the open road. The best part is that you get to do it all from the comfort of your own little camper. An RV is a big purchase though, which means there is a lot to consider before you make the leap and actually buy one. Here are a few things to consider before you make your final decision.

Should You Buy New or Used?

One of the first questions you’ll want to ask yourself is whether you should buy a new or used RV. There are pros and cons to both, but one of the biggest deciding factors is price. You will likely being paying quite a bit less for a used camper than you would if you buy new. One of the best benefits with buying new though is that you will have more choices, and you can get the newest model. You can also get a warranty with a new RV, which can end up saving you quite a bit later on. You will also get to customize the camper to your liking. However, if you do decide to go with used, you can still make certain changes to help make it more of what you want. You can always redecorate and buy a custom RV mattress to make it more comfortable.

What Will You Use it For?

An RV is a big investment, so if you don’t plan to use it very often, it might not be for you. In order to get a good return on your investment, you’ll need to use it at least a few times a year. You’ll also need to decide what type of add ons and special features you want. If you are going to be staying in it for long periods of time, you might want to consider getting cable and internet. If you want to be unplugged and go explore nature, these features might not be for you.

Should You Get a Trailer or Motorhome?

A motorhome is an RV that you drive, so you don’t have to worry about attaching it to your car. A trailer attaches to your car and gets pulled behind you on the road. If you don’t have the right car to attach such a large object to, you may want to consider a motorhome instead. Motorhomes can be better for long distances because it is more comfortable than a car for your family. You’ll likely see a lot more trailers than motorhomes when you start shopping around, but don’t be discouraged if a motorhome is what you really want. Some places actually specialize in motorhomes, so try looking at those dealerships first.

What Other Expenses Are There?

Many people forget that Rv’s come with quite a few expenses. You spend so much upfront that you might forget to factor in the expenses that come later on. The fact of the matter is though that Rv’s use a lot of gas. If you decide to travel across country, be prepared to fill up frequently. You’ll also have to spend money on maintenance and repair costs. Check the insurance cost before you buy so that you can factor that into how much you plan to spend.

There is no right or wrong choice when it comes to buying an RV. It really just matters that you get the one that works best for you and your family. It is one of the bigger purchases that people make, so you need to take your time and really consider what you want. Make a list of must haves before you start shopping. This is likely something you will have for many years to come, so you want it to be what you’ve always imagined.
